My pattern was "*". I got rid of the error by doing ".*" instead. As the error said, * needs to quantify something, and I hadn't given it any pattern to quantify.

Comment on Bill Goes Capsule

The one I saw was from 1995 and on Masterpiece Theatre. It was good enough that I won't check out the other versions. I'm not surprised that you're surprised: I'm a man of very diverse tastes.

Comment on Bill Goes Capsule

I must say that I a suprised Bill that you are a "sucker" for Jane Austen. I am curious which version of Persuasion you watched. My favortie is the newest BBC version which aired on PBS January 13th. I adore Jane Austen (not suprising, I know.)

I also really liked Enchanted, I liked how the girl saved the day for once too.

There are some good ideas for my blockbuster Q on your list too, thanks.

Comment on Earth Hour Can Bite My Ass

Another Heinlein comment - "If we all went back to nature, most of us would starve".

Comment on Earth Hour Can Bite My Ass

Quoting Lazarus Long:

There are hidden contradictions in the minds of people who "love Nature" while deploring the "artificialities" with which "Man has spoiled 'Nature.'" The obvious contradiction lies in their choice of words, which imply that Man and his artifacts are not part of "Nature" — but beavers and their dams are. But the contradictions go deeper than this prima-facie absurdity. In declaring his love for a beaver dam (erected by beavers for beavers' purposes) and his hatred for dams erected by men (for the purposes of men) the Naturist reveals his hatred for his own race — i.e., his own self-hatred.
In the case of "Naturists" such self-hatred is understandable; they are such a sorry lot. But hatred is too strong an emotion to feel toward them; pity and contempt are the most they rate.
As for me, willy-nilly I am a man, not a beaver, and H. sapiens is the only race I have or can have. Fortunately for me, I like being part of a race made up of men and women — it strikes me as a fine arrangement — and perfectly "natural" Believe it or not, there were "Naturists" who opposed the first flight to old Earth's Moon as being "unnaturaI" and a "despoiling of Nature."

Comment on Bill Goes Capsule

I don't know that it's being controlled by the media as much as just being a contrarian by nature. I avoided SPR as much because it was a Spielberg movie as because of the hype. A better example of my hype-related avoidance is Napoleon Dynamite. On the other hand, I saw Casino Royale as soon as it came out. In the end, I think I use hype as but one more knock on a given movie--not enough by itself to disqualify it from my attention but maybe enough to tip the balance.
Comment on Bill Goes Capsule

Maura Tierney isn't great, she's stupendous. And that's in still photos; I'd gladly watch (and listen) to her reading The Communist Manifesto. And I haven't yet tired of contemporary Shakespeare adaptations, so I'm putting that in my queue.

Payback plays an interesting game - that of making the good guy simply somewhat less bad than the rest of the bad guys. But I own it, and enjoy it.

Saving Private Ryan is the bomb. N.B. - is avoiding movies because of hype still being controlled by the media and pop culture? 50 points - essay question. (Also - if you liked SPR, you might want to try _Band of Brothers_, which Hanks produced.)

Comment on My Contribution

Thanks for the heads-up.
